![]() In 1951, scientists rediscovered the Bermuda petrel after it had been extinct for 330 years. Conservation efforts work, though, so we should be able to ensure that many species continue to survive, rather than relying on them being brought back from the dead. Species have been rediscovered after declared or presumed extinction before. As the fictional Dr Alan Grant of Jurassic Park said: “Life finds a way.” But, in reality, Lazarus species are extremely rare, and sadly we are certain that many more species have indeed gone extinct in the last 100 years. So, are these Lazarus species cause for hope? To a degree, yes. These include: Yirratji (northern pig-footed bandicoot) Parroo (white-footed. The bat was rediscovered in 2001 but some of their habitat, on Cebu and Negros islands, remains unprotected so they are still threatened. Thirty-eight native mammal species have been driven to extinction since colonisation and possibly seven subspecies. a Habitat destruction and hunting have reduced populations so thoroughly that the species is listed. These species are referred to as Lazarus species for instance, the Miles’ robber frog was brought back from the dead after it was located in a Honduran cloud forest in 2008. It wasn’t until 2014 that Australian Museum researcher, Harry Parnaby, was able to determine that. ![]() It is thought that the species declined partly through hunting it for its meat but mainly because sugar cane plantations replaced the forests where the bats had foraged for fruit. The ivory-billed woodpecker ( Campephilus principalis) is a possibly extinct woodpecker that is native to the bottomland hardwood forests and temperate coniferous forests of the Southern United States and Cuba. They caught several bats spanning nine known species, and a single, unidentifiable female bat. ![]() However, the species was declared extinct in 1996 as none had been seen since 1964, despite intensive surveys. Lazarus taxon is organism that reappears after its presumed extinction, indicated e.g. Rediscovery implies that something was lost or forgotten but the term often gives the impression that a species has returned from the dead hence the term lazarus species. ![]() This large bat was once so abundant that its huge piles of guano (faeces) were mined and used as fertilizer. ![]()
